For a split ac the condenser unit is put outdoors and faces the wrath of the elements. Use proper air conditioner condenser covers to cover the condenser as it is the most important part of the air conditioner that controls the cooling function. When washing the unit ensure that no water remains on top before you put air conditioner condenser covers, so that the unit does not rust when packed during winter.
Remember to drain all water or liquid from the machine as any liquid left inside will freeze during winter and damage the air conditioner. If possible remove the portable, window mounted air conditioner before packing it and put it on a raised platform before placing window air conditioner covers. This will check condensation and save the bottom portion of the air conditioner form rusting. Ensure that the air conditioner covers are waterproof so that no water enters the machine when it rains.
